AUSTIN, TX – An off-duty police officer died Wednesday morning when an intoxicated driver struck him at a construction site near The Domain in Austin.
KXAN reports that the incident happened around 2:15 a.m. on the northbound service road for MoPac Expressway near Domain Boulevard.
Authorities say the off-duty officer was providing traffic support at a Domain construction site when the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Lindsay Smith, crashed into him with her vehicle.
Austin Police identified the victim as 35-year-old Jeffrey Richardson from the Poteet Police Department. They say Richardson died after transport to St. David’s Medical Center in Round Rock.
Law enforcement officials arrested Smith after conducting a sobriety test and taking a toxicology sample. They charged her with intoxication assault.
The northbound service road for MoPac remained closed in the area of the accident for around five hours.
