Austin Strategic Mobility Plan
Everyone who drives in Austin should get to know The Austin Strategic Mobility Plan (ASMP), which establishes “Activity Corridors’ ‘ to make the city more walkable and bikeable.
The idea is to reduce car traffic and reduce congestion on Austin’s roads.
Adopted in 2019, The Austin Strategic Mobility Plan is Austin’s first comprehensive transportation plan. It guides our short- and long-term transportation projects, programs, initiatives, and investments.
The Austin Strategic Mobility Plan includes driving, walking, bicycling, rolling and taking public transportation.
The process is legally complicated and expensive, and funding is our biggest issue. The project will make the major arterial streets far more efficient by reducing trips by car through the methods described in the ASMP.
“The ASMP is all about supporting our partner agency, Capital Metro, in implementing Project Connect, its long-term vision plan for high-capacity transit in the region” said Warner Cook – Transportation Planner in a Reddit thread. “Proposed lines include the Orange Line that travels along South Congress, the Gold Line on South Lamar, and the Blue Line which would follow East Riverside out towards ABIA.
How Will The Austin Strategic Mobility Plan Impact Pedestrian and Bicycle Traffic?
Last year, City Council unanimously approved an update to the plan’s urban trail, bicycle, and sidewalk and crossing goals. The city’s Urban Trails Plan expands Austin’s urban trail system from around 30 miles to nearly 60 miles in total, with amenities like wayfinding and lighting and a comprehensive ADA assessment of existing trails.
The ASMP’s Bicycle Plan and Sidewalks, Crossings, and Shared Streets Plan includes 810 miles of planned sidewalks, 370 miles of planned shared street spaces and 805 miles of planned biking infrastructure based on a lengthy research and community engagement process. Investments in tree canopy, vegetation management and closing the city’s many “crossing gaps” in highly trafficked areas have also been added to the list of goals.
How Will Austin Strategic Mobility Plan Impact Areas Outside Of Central Austin?
“The ASMP tries to address the lack of usable infrastructure where it wasn’t originally required with several policies,” said Cook. “For instance, with sidewalks in aging neighborhoods, “Complete the sidewalk system” policy is aimed at filling in all the missing gaps (or whole streets worth) of sidewalks throughout all of Austin.”
