AUSTIN, TX – One person lost their life late Friday afternoon when their vehicle was struck by a train in southwest Austin, according to CBS Austin.
The fatal incident occurred in the 1700 block of Matthews Lane, between Dittmar Road and Matthews Lane. Austin-Travis County EMS personnel and Austin Fire crews were dispatched to the scene at about 4:21 p.m.
Little information has been made available at this time, but a preliminary investigation indicates a Union Pacific train was heading northbound when it collided with the victim’s vehicle, which was at a railroad crossing.
Despite life-saving measures performed by responding ATCEMS members, the driver of the struck vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene at 5:04 p.m.
Motorists were advised to find alternate routes around the area, as parts of Dittmar Road and Matthews Lane was shut down during the emergency response.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the event.
