AUSTIN, TX – Two men died Saturday after an alleged drunk driver struck them along a major roadway in central Austin, reports KVUE.
The incident happened around 2:26 a.m. in the Highland area along North Lamar Boulevard between Brentwood Street and Romeria Drive. This is just northwest of Austin Community College’s Highland Campus.
Police say that the 22-year-old driver who struck the pedestrians was likely intoxicated at the time of the crash. It’s unclear if the victims were walking along the sidewalk or attempting to cross the street when the accident occurred.
Both pedestrians died at the scene. Authorities identified them as Luis Antonio Trevino Maldonado, 21, and Johnny Joe Reyes, 50.
Austin Police arrested the driver, identified as Edward Rodriguez, at the scene.
